Getting From Here to There: Transportation's Long, Slow March Toward Autonomy
When cars first began appearing on real streets, many people didn't trust them at all. Some places genuinely required a person to walk in front of an early car waving a red flag, warning pedestrians and horses that this strange, loud machine was coming. It sounds almost comical now. But it points to something real and worth understanding: the technology being possible and the technology being trusted have never been the same moment, and the gap between them has always mattered more than people expect.
The Car Was Technically Ready Long Before People Were
Early automobiles could genuinely, technically drive down a real road well before most people were willing to actually trust one — as a driver, as a passenger, or simply as a pedestrian walking nearby. That gap between 'this technically works' and 'people genuinely, comfortably trust this' wasn't a failure of the technology. It was a completely normal, expected, and honestly necessary part of any real, significant technology actually becoming part of daily life.
That gap took real time to close, and it closed through real, lived experience — people gradually seeing cars work safely, again and again, in situations they personally understood and could relate to. No amount of a car company simply insisting 'trust us, it's safe' could have closed that gap nearly as fast as real, everyday experience eventually did, over real years, not overnight.
Self-Driving Vehicles Are Repeating This Exact Pattern
Vehicles that can drive themselves in at least some real, specific situations already technically exist and already technically work, in real, documented, tested conditions. But broad, genuine public trust in them is still very much a work in progress, and honestly, that's not surprising at all — it's exactly the same real gap that existed with early cars, just showing up again with a new, different technology.
This gap isn't purely irrational either. Trusting a machine to safely make real, split-second decisions about your physical safety is a genuinely big, serious ask, and it's reasonable for that trust to be earned gradually, through real, demonstrated safety over real time, rather than granted immediately just because the technology has become technically capable. Being cautious here isn't the same as being unreasonable.
A genuinely useful way to think about any technology involving real physical safety: the honest question was never simply 'can this technology work.' It was always 'has this technology proven, through real, sustained, lived experience, that it deserves to be trusted with something this important.' Those are two different questions, and mixing them up is where a lot of both excessive fear and excessive hype about new technology tends to come from.
What Actually Builds Real Trust, Historically
Looking honestly at how trust in cars actually developed over real time, it wasn't a single dramatic moment or a single convincing argument that did it. It was accumulated, ordinary, repeated experience — millions of real, unremarkable, safe trips, each one adding a small amount of real, earned confidence. Real safety records, built up over real years, mattered far more than any single impressive demonstration ever could.
This is almost certainly the same real path ahead for self-driving vehicles, and probably for most AI systems that touch anything involving genuine, real-world physical safety. Not one dramatic breakthrough moment where trust suddenly, completely arrives — but a slow, real accumulation of ordinary, safe, unremarkable experience, each instance adding a small amount of real, earned trust, until one day the caution that feels completely reasonable right now quietly starts to feel unnecessary instead.
The Part That Won't Actually Change
Whatever specific technology ends up moving us from place to place in fifty years, it will still need to earn the same real, human trust that horses, then cars, then whatever comes after self-driving vehicles, have always needed to earn. That process has never been instant, no matter how impressive the underlying technology already was. It's always been slow, cumulative, and built on real, lived, ordinary experience — and there's no genuine reason to expect that particular part of the story to change, no matter how advanced the machine doing the actual driving eventually becomes.
